Events
Building community both during school hours and outside of them, with all of our families and neighbors, is an important part of Gantry View School’s culture. We organize community-wide events, trips, and activities throughout the year to support our students’ learning, enable parents to form connections with each other, and sometimes offer a chance for students to demonstrate what they have learned.
Honoring First Responders
Students learned how fire department members stepped forward with so much bravery on 9/11 in 2001, and those who did the same during Covid. They wrote letters of appreciation to LIC’s NYFD and NYPD and delivered them with treats.
Diversity and Inclusion in Real Time
GVS students have regular meet-ups with students from a nearby special ed school. It’s their chance to practice inclusion and outreach to those who need special consideration.
Out and About
Whether it’s to Hunter’s Point Library, Queens Museum, PS1, or other points-of-interest in Queens, GVS students take part in the cultural bounty that reflects the diversity of background and contribution in this amazing borough.
Neighbors and Partners
GVS is in the heart of LIC, which makes it easy for us to know our neighbors and to partner with them to create bigger-better than what we can do on our own. It takes a village, and we only feel lucky to be part of this one.
Involvement
Parent involvement is an important feature of Gantry View School and part of what makes it work so well. Parents are involved in different ways, depending on their circumstances. Even parents who work full-time can participate meaningfully in their child’s education. Many work with them at home to continue their progress, and regularly celebrate their learning achievements. Some parents bring their skills, hobbies, and professional experience to the classroom by teaching enrichment classes. Others assist in planning and chaperoning field trips.
Our learning managers reach out regularly to parents with suggestions for how they can help their children achieve their learning objectives, both academic and social. The result is a cohesive sense of family, school, and community, and the belief that learning can occur anywhere and at any time.
