What does fluency get you?

Fluency and stable learning come about through repetition, active responses, consistency of language, contextualizing, and then transfer to new contexts, to name just a few of the interventions/strategies we use at GVS. Just as in reading, GVS insists on fluency for the four math operations, and later for algorithmic procedures, because you can’t do higher-level math if you trip over its underlying skills. Fluency frees up “mental real estate” to do the harder stuff down the road. Be on the lookout for media buzz on this, but know that we’ve been doing it all along and it takes a lot to pull off fluency correctly. GVS’s math program is individualized so that we can get it right.

It’s not just reading that has scientific underpinnings that were ignored for decades. It’s all learning, be it math, handwriting, writing, listening, presentation skills, and on and on. Explaining the complexities of learning in clear language is also a skill. We hope we’ve hit our target here.
